Staying Healthy this Christmas

Santa is coming!!! Christmas is one of the best times of the year but can take its toll on our waist line as we adopt the “well it is Christmas attitude”.

It’s certainly not the time to be worrying about counting calories, we don’t want to the joy taken away from the festivities by obsessing how long it will take to burn off a mince pie! Here are some tips to get you through the festivities late nights and overindulgence that is inevitable but enjoyable over the Christmas and New Year period.

Start as you mean to go on

Breakfast really does set you up for the day. Porridge is a great, versatile breakfast that stabilises your blood sugars. Add some of our delicious protein powder for a protein kick that will keep you fuller for longer!

Stay Hydrated

If you’re planning on a big night in/out (depending where you are in the country) remember to get plenty of water before and the day after. Snack it up

Adele’s unbelievable transformation

Let’s all take a minute to look back and appreciate Adele’s MASSIVE weight loss transformation which she unveiled on her 32nd birthday in lockdown. The Hello singer is stunning whatever her size and it has never got in the way of her storming success. Adele has always been a queen having said that she is perfectly happy with her size and refusing to work with anyone who had an issue with it. Back in October 2019, we saw her much slimmer figure and following her split from ex-husband, she has taken the revenge bod to a new level. However, there is a question on everyone’s lips- how did she do it?


Adele has been said to have credited her amazing weight loss to the Sirtfood Diet. What exactly is the Sirtfood diet then?


According to Good Food the Sirtfood diet is about eating food that is high in sirtuins. Sirtuins are believed to protect cells in the body from dying when they are under stress and are thought to regulate inflammation, metabolism and the aging process. It’s thought that sirtuins influence the body’s ability to burn fat and boost metabolism, resulting in a seven pound weight loss a week while maintaining muscle.

  • Dark chocolate (that is at least 85 per cent cocoa)

The second phase is the maintenance phase and although on the surface looks restrictive, the authors claim it is about eating the best foods that nature has to offer.


There have been reports to suggest that Adele has been worked with hypnotherapist Susan Hepburn in the last few months to help her achieve her dramatic weight loss. Her hypnotherapist (allegedly) has claimed to have helped the star kick her smoking habit and adopt a new healthier lifestyle, especially around food.

Traditional Tanning Pills Vs Vita-Tan

At Vita-Tan we wanted to talk about traditional tanning pills the side effects they can produce and how Vita-Tan has none of the nasties in that can cause adverse side effects. We don’t want to be confused with old school tanning pills!


Tanning pills aren’t new and have been around since the 70’s and were used by lots of body builders.


What’s in Tanning Pills

A tan without sun exposure, sounds too good to be true, well that’s because it is! The sunless tanning pills contain high doses of beta-carotene and canthaxanthin, which belong to a group called carotenoids. When you ingest this colour additive, it purportedly releases pigment-changing compounds in your skin, and long-term use will make your skin turn darker.

We eat natural and synthesised carotenoids all the time. They give fruit and vegetables yellow, orange and red colouration and are added to egg yolk to give it a yellow colour. While eating foods high in carotenoids can boost our tanning ability, you need a lot if it is the change your skin tone.

Side effects


Canthaxanthin, for instance, can accumulate as red and yellow crystals at the back of your eyes and cause damage to your eyesight. It’s been noted that the crystals slowly disappear in the years after a person stops taking canthaxanthin, in severe cases, they can damage blood vessels in the retina.



Beta Carotene

Large doses of vitamin A can be toxic but taking beta-carotene as a substitute is safer. However, long-term, excessive use are linked to an increase in certain types of cancer.

Other side effects include:

  • hives and welts
  • gastrointestinal issues, such as abdominal cramps and diarrhoea
  • liver damage
  • retinopathy (eye damage)
  • vision changes
  • vision loss

Orange not Bronze

Tanning is caused by increased melanin production which darkens the skins natural pigmentation on the surface. Tanning pills work from the inside out and they don’t give the bronze look you might be hoping for. They actually give you orange skin instead, while not serious it’s definitely not the look we would be going for.

This can make your eyes and skin look yellow. Excessive Beta carotene may lead to a high intake of vitamin A in your body and can cause jaundice, giving your skin a yellow complexion and actually more serious than the orange skin.

Probably the worst thing about tanning pills is that the side effects can last for years after taking tanning pills. Sometimes staying in the body between 2 and 7 years.

Why Don’t my Legs Tan?

This is a such a big question and easily one of the most irritating things about tanning. Time on the sunbed or a week away in the sun and while your arms, face and middle tan and yet your legs are left behind either burnt, patchy or they’ve not even developed any colour! Seriously, it is so frustrating! Here are a few reasons that your legs don’t tan as well.


  1. Less melanin
    The reason your legs don’t tan is down to the production of melanin. At Vita-Tan, you probably hear us talk about melanin a LOT. Well that is because it is the number 1 contributing factor to the whole tanning process and activating the production of melanin is responsible for giving you that golden glow. On your legs the skin doesn’t produce as much of the magnificent melanin than the rest of your body, which results in them getting less tan.
  2. Thicker skin
    Skin on the legs it thicker than most other parts of the body and this makes it harder for UV light from the sun and sunbeds to penetrate the skin.
  3. Dry Skin
    You might have already noticed that the skin on your legs is drier than most other places. The dry skin usually reflects the UV light making the tanning process even harder. The dryer the skin the quicker the exfoliation.
  4. Faster exfoliation
    Many women shave or wax their legs and doing this exfoliates the top layers of skin more so, which is where most of your tan is held. Where possible keep exfoliation down to once a week. Also, avoid long hot baths, a strange one but this also gets rid of the tanned upper layer of skin.
  5. Sunbeds
    In conventional sun beds most of the tanning energy is concentrated to the top and middle of the body. This is why you might find that your middle goes a fabulous colour but again your legs are left behind.

  1. Exfoliate
    Before each tanning session give your legs a scrub and remove any of the dead skin cells that could be reflecting the light.
  2. Avoid waxing and shaving
    We aren’t saying go around with hairy legs but leave 1 or 2 days after a tanning session to wax or shave.
