Adele’s unbelievable transformation

Let’s all take a minute to look back and appreciate Adele’s MASSIVE weight loss transformation which she unveiled on her 32nd birthday in lockdown. The Hello singer is stunning whatever her size and it has never got in the way of her storming success. Adele has always been a queen having said that she is perfectly happy with her size and refusing to work with anyone who had an issue with it. Back in October 2019, we saw her much slimmer figure and following her split from ex-husband, she has taken the revenge bod to a new level. However, there is a question on everyone’s lips- how did she do it?

Adele has been said to have credited her amazing weight loss to the Sirtfood Diet. What exactly is the Sirtfood diet then?

According to Good Food the Sirtfood diet is about eating food that is high in sirtuins. Sirtuins are believed to protect cells in the body from dying when they are under stress and are thought to regulate inflammation, metabolism and the aging process. It’s thought that sirtuins influence the body’s ability to burn fat and boost metabolism, resulting in a seven pound weight loss a week while maintaining muscle.

The ten most common sirtuin foods include:

  • Green tea
  • Dark chocolate (that is at least 85 per cent cocoa)
  • Apples
  • Citrus fruits
  • Parsley
  • Turmeric
  • Kale
  • Blueberries
  • Capers
  • Red wine

Hang on… did that say red wine and dark chocolate. Ok, you have really got our attention.

The diet is divided into 2 phases, the first being restrictive and only 1000 calories a day for the first 3 days. From day 4-7 is increased to 1,500 and consists of 2 sirtuin rich meals and drinks. The second phase is the maintenance phase and although on the surface looks restrictive, the authors claim it is about eating the best foods that nature has to offer.

There have been reports to suggest that Adele has been worked with hypnotherapist Susan Hepburn in the last few months to help her achieve her dramatic weight loss. Her hypnotherapist (allegedly) has claimed to have helped the star kick her smoking habit and adopt a new healthier lifestyle, especially around food.

The hypnotherapist claimed it wasn’t about dieting or restriction but adopting a healthier choice. All too often, we get stuck in the cycle of restrict and binge and this isn’t sustainable in the long term. If we claim that we are cutting out certain food groups, you can guarantee what we will be obsessing about. Does this sound familiar? Certainly did to us!

It is thought that she has lost around a staggering 7 stone! I definitely want a little bit of what she’s having or what she isn’t having as the case may seem. As with any new diet, it has come under scrutiny by nutritionists for being too restrictive and not realistic. 1000 calories for 2 days is incredibly difficult to achieve for most people and adopting a balanced diet and exercise is a much safer way to go. However, it worked for Adele and we take our hats off to her.

We have been wondering if she had been having a bit of Skinny Juice in the morning to boost her diet or maybe some fat metabolisers. There is no right or wrong way to lose weight, only your way. That is why we exist, we have created a range of natural supplements that work in harmony with your body’s natural processes to making weight loss simple.

Traditional Tanning Pills Vs Vita-Tan

At Vita-Tan we wanted to talk about traditional tanning pills the side effects they can produce and how Vita-Tan has none of the nasties in that can cause adverse side effects. We don’t want to be confused with old school tanning pills!

Tanning pills aren’t new and have been around since the 70’s and were used by lots of body builders.

What’s in Tanning Pills

A tan without sun exposure, sounds too good to be true, well that’s because it is! The sunless tanning pills contain high doses of beta-carotene and canthaxanthin, which belong to a group called carotenoids. When you ingest this colour additive, it purportedly releases pigment-changing compounds in your skin, and long-term use will make your skin turn darker.

We eat natural and synthesised carotenoids all the time. They give fruit and vegetables yellow, orange and red colouration and are added to egg yolk to give it a yellow colour. While eating foods high in carotenoids can boost our tanning ability, you need a lot if it is the change your skin tone.

Side effects

Canthaxanthin, for instance, can accumulate as red and yellow crystals at the back of your eyes and cause damage to your eyesight. It’s been noted that the crystals slowly disappear in the years after a person stops taking canthaxanthin, in severe cases, they can damage blood vessels in the retina.

Beta Carotene

Large doses of vitamin A can be toxic but taking beta-carotene as a substitute is safer. However, long-term, excessive use are linked to an increase in certain types of cancer.

Other side effects include:

  • hives and welts
  • gastrointestinal issues, such as abdominal cramps and diarrhoea
  • liver damage
  • retinopathy (eye damage)
  • vision changes
  • vision loss

Orange not Bronze

Tanning is caused by increased melanin production which darkens the skins natural pigmentation on the surface. Tanning pills work from the inside out and they don’t give the bronze look you might be hoping for. They actually give you orange skin instead, while not serious it’s definitely not the look we would be going for.

This can make your eyes and skin look yellow. Excessive Beta carotene may lead to a high intake of vitamin A in your body and can cause jaundice, giving your skin a yellow complexion and actually more serious than the orange skin.

Probably the worst thing about tanning pills is that the side effects can last for years after taking tanning pills. Sometimes staying in the body between 2 and 7 years.

Vita-Tan for the Win

Vita-Tan isn’t a sunless tanning product, it is a perfectly balanced supplement containing copper which boosts the body’s natural production of melanin. There is definitely no canthaxanthin or beta-carotene, it’s a super combo of minerals and superfoods to boost your tan, give you more energy and your metabolism a natural, yet effective way.

5 Amazing Benefits of Collagen Supplements

Seriously, the benefits of collagen supplements are amazing, and we wondered why we haven’t been taking it for years. When you hear the word collagen, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Probably something that helps your skin stay young. As we age our collagen production reduces which can impact our skin, joints and muscles. These side effects can be reduced by taking collagen supplements and there have been a variety of studies that support their effectiveness. Restoring skin elasticity and reducing dryness, taking collagen can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and delay the signs of ageing.

While amazing for your skin, Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body and is responsible for so much. It is the major component of connective tissues that make up several body parts, including tendons, ligaments, skin, and muscles. As we prepare for the launch of our Vita-Collagen, let’s have a look at some of the amazing benefits of collagen.

  1. Anti-Ageing

We don’t speak about collagen enough when it comes to anti-ageing rituals. Collagen is important for keeping your skin healthy, it provides elasticity and hydration. As our collagen production decreases it is this that leads to wrinkles and dry skin.

  1. Relieve joint pain

As collagen production decreases as we get older, this can lead to joint pain and conditions like osteoarthritis. Taking these supplements has been shown to lower inflammation in the joints and can stimulate your body’s own collagen production and provide pain relief against joint disorders.

  1. Strong Bones

The bones in our body are made mostly of collagen (we know, we didn’t know that either!) As we get older and our collagen production reduces this can reduce our bone mass and potentially lead to osteoporosis and bone fractures. Taking supplements can increase bone mass index and also lower the protein in the blood that stimulate the bones to breakdown.

  1. Boost muscle mass

Skin, bones and muscle! Collagen is necessary to keep your muscles strong and can promote the synthesis of creatine which stimulates muscle growth after exercise. Gents get yourself some Vita-collagen and build up your muscles.

  1. Improve heart health

The benefits of collagen supplements just keep on coming. Studies have suggested that taking collagen regularly may reduce heart-related conditions. In one study, participants took collagen for 6 months and at the end they found a significant reduction in artery stiffness and increased levels of good cholesterol.

It is mind blowing how much collagen is responsible for, keeping us young on the outside and in. These 5 benefits are the only ones that are currently backed by scientific studies, there are even more positive benefits that are waiting for validation including:

  • maintaining a healthy gut
  • maintaining a healthy weight
  • reducing anxiety
  • improving mood
  • promoting healthy nail and hair growth

We have been testing out the product ourselves and founder Nicola Bird is turning 40 this year and can’t believe how amazing her skin feels. We think you’ll agree that she no way looks anywhere close to 40!

Why Don’t my Legs Tan?

This is a such a big question and easily one of the most irritating things about tanning. Time on the sunbed or a week away in the sun and while your arms, face and middle tan and yet your legs are left behind either burnt, patchy or they’ve not even developed any colour! Seriously, it is so frustrating! Here are a few reasons that your legs don’t tan as well.

  1. Less melanin
The reason your legs don’t tan is down to the production of melanin. At Vita-Tan, you probably hear us talk about melanin a LOT. Well that is because it is the number 1 contributing factor to the whole tanning process and activating the production of melanin is responsible for giving you that golden glow. On your legs the skin doesn’t produce as much of the magnificent melanin than the rest of your body, which results in them getting less tan.
  2. Thicker skin
Skin on the legs it thicker than most other parts of the body and this makes it harder for UV light from the sun and sunbeds to penetrate the skin.
  3. Dry Skin
You might have already noticed that the skin on your legs is drier than most other places. The dry skin usually reflects the UV light making the tanning process even harder. The dryer the skin the quicker the exfoliation.
  4. Faster exfoliation
Many women shave or wax their legs and doing this exfoliates the top layers of skin more so, which is where most of your tan is held. Where possible keep exfoliation down to once a week. Also, avoid long hot baths, a strange one but this also gets rid of the tanned upper layer of skin.
  5. Sunbeds
In conventional sun beds most of the tanning energy is concentrated to the top and middle of the body. This is why you might find that your middle goes a fabulous colour but again your legs are left behind.

Don’t lose faith yet though! That might sound all doom and gloom but there are some helpful tanning tips to help your legs get the tan they deserve!

  1. Exfoliate
Before each tanning session give your legs a scrub and remove any of the dead skin cells that could be reflecting the light.
  2. Avoid waxing and shaving
We aren’t saying go around with hairy legs but leave 1 or 2 days after a tanning session to wax or shave.
  3. Take your Vita-Tan
The biggest reason it is difficult to tan on any area of the body is the production of melanin. Vita-Tan has been specially formulated to boost the body’s natural production of melanin. Taken regularly, it can help you achieve a deeper tan and better still, longer lasting!

Tanning your legs and achieving a gorgeous glow shouldn’t be complicated. Give it a go and show us those amazing pins and share your before and after with the Vita-Tan team!

Taking an hour or so in the garden is a lovely way to de-stress, relax and unwind. Make the most of your space and create a comfy corner facing the sun. It doesn’t have to be a fancy deckchair, although this does look nice. Get some blankets, cushions and arrange them on the lawn. The most important part is creating a space that will allow you to fully relax. Maybe lock the children in the house with plenty of snacks to avoid disruption.

Get a book at the ready

One of the best past times when relaxing in the sun? Reading! What is your favourite book? Or do you prefer an audible so you can completely immerse yourself? If you’re looking for something new, here are the BBC’s top recommended reads of 2020:

  • Motherwell: A Girlhood by Deborah Orr. …
  • Apeirogon by Colum McCann. …
  • Cleanness by Garth Greenwell. …

Vita-Tans 5 Top Tips for Safe Tanning

A fake bake can’t quite beat the real deal when it comes to feel-good factor of basking in the sunlight. While we all holiday in our back garden (when the weather permits) you might be using the time to relax and get in some tanning time. With the summer well on the way, how can you tan safely without damaging your skin?

At Vita-Tan we have put together our top tips for a safe, but killer tan.

  1. Don’t scrimp on sunscreen

Let’s not confuse sunscreen with sun block, it’s an old age myth that wearing sun cream will stop you getting a tan. It won’t! It will however protect your skin from the harmful UV rays that cause long-term skin damage. When you choose a sunscreen check the label to make sure that it is a good all-rounder and offers high protection from UVA and UVB.

Sunscreen doesn’t stop the production of melanin which is what causes the skin to get that luscious glow. Remember, UV rays can still penetrate through clouds so always protect your skin in all weather!

  1. Get to know your tan time
We all have that one friend that gets a deep tan with hardly any effort and the one who burns at the first sight of sun! Well interestingly, everyone has a tanning cut off point where the body physically cannot produce any more melanin. Even if you’re outside for a solid 6 hours, the tanning time remains the same. It’s around the 2-hour mark but people with fairer skin it is probably a bit lower. After that point, you’re just risking sunburn and skin damage.
  2. Take regular breaks
If we only have around 2 hours of good tanning time, space it out. Regular breaks lower the UV intensity and it means a longer lasting, healthier tan. The sun is at its strongest between 11am and 2pm, so be extra careful and take a few additional breaks.
  3. Eat sun rich foods!

Sun and food- now you’re talking. There are some foods that are known to boost the skins own SPF, known as lycopene. Red and orange fruit and veg are some of the best sources and can actually boost your own sun protection by 33%! Another cracking antioxidant is polyphenols found in green tea (seriously is there anything that magic tea can’t help with!) and some omega-3 rich foods like oily fish. Finally finish off with some dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is full of flavonoids that can help to protect against sunburn. That’s a full delicious meal and pudding right there that will actually protect your skin too.

  1. Swap your tan accelerating creams to supplements
This isn’t us just being biased by the way. Research has shown that tan accelerating creams are total rubbish and can’t do anything to stimulate the body’s natural melanin. BUT supplements can. Copper is one of the main ingredients in Vita-Tan an is essential for melanin production in the skin. If you’re pale and struggle to tan, then this is a great option for you! Even some of our paler customers are showcasing their newly discovered tan lines.

Get your glow on!

Remember, safe and sensible tanning is the best way. Always wear sunscreen and protect your skin. Using vita-tan will give your melanin a kickstart for a longer lasting, deeper tan for maximum satisfaction.
